Winter on Long island has come in like a linebacker this year. In fact, this is the coldest, snowiest winter we’ve had in at least 4 years. Homeownership has many joys. Snow removal is not necessarily one of them.
Effective snow removal requires some planning. THE DONOFRIO TEAM is here to help with some shoveling and snow removal techniques.
Safety is number one. Act early and consistently to manage build up, clearing 4-6 inches at a time to prevent heavy, compacted ice. Push, don’t lift whenever possible. Push snow to the side rather than lifting to prevent back strain.
If using a snowblower, be sure to inspect beforehand, having gas available, or equipment fully charged. Use shovels with curved handles to reduce strain on your back.
Work with the wind at your back to prevent snow from blowing back into cleared areas, prioritizing driveways, walkways, emergency exits and fire hydrants. Spread ice melt, sand or kitty litter on icy patches to prevent slipping and falling.
Use a long handled roof rake or broom to remove snow and icicles from roof edges while standing safely on the ground.
Take frequent breaks and dress in layers to avoid injuries. Stay hydrated and stop immediately and seek help if you are injured or feel pain, especially in your back or chest. Having a snow buddy if possible is a good idea, not only to make the job easier but to check on your safety.
Make sure to have plenty of hot cocoa on hand.
