Winterizing Your Home

Winterizing Your Home

So the holidays are over and now comes the cold, dreary part of the winter. Preparing your house for the winter is essential to keeping it warm and cozy, as well as energy efficient. THE DONOFRIO TEAM is here to help. Here are some easy and affordable tips to help you prepare.

Add weather stripping to doors and window. This will prevent cold air from coming in and warm air from getting out. Weather stripping is affordable and can be bought at any home improvement center. Door sweeps are also an easy and effective way to keep cold out and heat in.

Clean your gutter. To prevent clogging clear gutters of leaves and other debris. This will allow melting snow to drain properly as well as prevent icicles and slippery walkways. Gutter guards are also a good option if you want to avoid clearing them out yourself.

Check your attic for  proper insulation. The majority of heat loss occurs through openings in the attic. Caulk around  windows and use foam outlet protectors to prevent cold from entering your house.

Get a programmable thermostat, or lower the heat when you're not home. The Department of Energy suggests keeping the thermostat at 68 degrees when you're home and lowering it a few degrees when you're out or sleeping.

Cold temperatures can damage outdoor furniture and grills. Store these in a garage or basement if possible, or protect them with covers, also available at home improvement centers.

Outdoor equipment such as mowers and trimmers should be cleaned and maintained before storing. If you have a snowblower, now is the time to inspect it and make sure it's working properly. Have a supply of gas available as well.

Call your local power company and see if they conduct energy saving assessments. It's often a free service and can help you identify specific changes to make your home more energy efficient.

Replace your furnace filter. A dirty filter will obstruct airflow and make your furnace run longer, and work harder, resulting in higher energy bills. Replace filters every 3 months.

Inspect your roof for broken or missing shingles, and leaks or deterioration. Cut back overhanging branches and make sure the attic is properly ventilated to prevent mold and mildew from forming.

Protect your pipes to keep them from freezing and bursting, especially if they are exposed, with tubular pipe wrap and insulation fittings.

Stock up on winter staples before the next storm hits. Snow shovels, ice scrapers, flashlights and extra batteries. Even a supply of extra water and food that does not require preparation is not a bad idea. Don't forget the snacks and extra pet food.

Don't worry, spring is around the corner, and remember, any time is a good time to put your house up for sale. THE DONOFRIO TEAM is always at your service. Call us at 631-772-0304
